When confronted with output from sources beyond your control, using the default tools to modify and/or filter the printed material isn't always as easy as it may sound.

I'll show some cases where output to STDOUT that must be modified can cause havoc, and show you some ways to get around that. Even the workarounds are not perfect, and reveal dark corners in perl itself, that may or may not be solved by the time the talk is presented.
